MARIENBAD, ETC., A RAYUELA ARCHIVE
By CHILES SAMANIEGO
118 pages | Published 2019
Softcover with partial dust jacket
PhP350
In the loosely linked, SFF-inflected stories that comprise the “Marienbad” cycle, Chiles Samaniego presents obsessive, shapeshifting narratives that do not so much pay homage to film and literary artifacts as interact with them. Or even re-inhabit them—taking cues from works as diverse as Alain Resnais and Alain Robbe-Grillet’s Last Year at Marienbad, Adolfo Bioy Casares’s The Invention of Morel, Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, these stories launch characters into various physical spaces as they also get lost in labyrinthine mindscapes, reeling the reader into mysteriously compelling research (or ‘archival’) projects, while also circling around a central unspoken, narrative void.
About the author
Chiles Samaniego has been published in Kritika Kultura, Metro Serye, and Weird Tales, and is the author of Millennium (Youth & Beauty Brigade, 2015) and several loosely related stories that have been collected as MARIENBAD (Youth & Beauty Brigade, 2012) and Marienbad, etc. (Cubao Editions, 2019).
ABOUT THE DYING DOG AND FIVE OTHER STORIES
By PAUL S. DE GUZMAN
84 pages | Published 2019
Softcover with partial dust jacket
PhP350
Can the words we use to talk about love convey its full weight or hinder its full expression? In About the dying dog and five other stories, Paul S. de Guzman explores how saying “I love you” leads to clarity or complication, starts or ends conversations, serves as a balm or a weapon.
A teenage couple performs a courtship by embodying scenes from Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise; an evangelical pastor attempts to reconcile his love for his church and his grief for a son; a woman experiences the breakdown of a marriage through the filter of learning a third language. In stories employing varying forms, styles, and voices, About the dying dog and five other stories examines different forms of love—romantic and familial; human, divine, and animal.
About the author
Born and raised in Bulacan, Paul S. de Guzman earned a degree in journalism in UP Diliman, and is currently pursuing a master’s, also in UP Diliman. Together with Sandra Nicole Roldan, he founded the independent press Cubao Editions.
